Johannes-Maria Vianney came from simple farmers. From 1805 he attended the parish school of Ecully with very modest learning success; only after a pilgrimage to the grave of Johannes Franz Regis in Lalouvesc did he make modest progress. The first few years he lived very lonely, spent many hours in prayer, fasted. In 1825 he founded a girls' school. More and more people felt attracted to him in the period that followed.
